Adam Budak

Curator, Art Theorist and Writer

MOCAK – Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków

Ádám Budak is a curator and art theorist, and since 2025 he has served as Director of MOCAK – Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków. He has worked with numerous prestigious institutions and curated major international biennials.

Since the summer of 2025, Ádám Budak has been Director of MOCAK – Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków. Prior to this, from 2020 he served as Artistic Director of Kestner Gesellschaft in Hanover, as well as Artistic Director and Chief Curator of the National Gallery in Prague. Earlier in his career, he was a member of the curatorial teams at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and at Kunsthaus Graz, and he began his professional path as a contemporary art curator at Bunkier Sztuki Gallery in Kraków. He is a regular curator of international biennials, including Manifesta 7, the Gherdëina Biennale and the Prague Biennale. At the Venice Biennale, he has overseen the curatorial work of several national pavilions: following the Polish, Estonian and Latvian pavilions, he served as Commissioner of the Czech Pavilion for three consecutive years. His curatorial practice includes landmark projects such as Louise Bourgeois’s first retrospective exhibition in Poland (Zachęta – National Gallery of Contemporary Art, Warsaw, 2003) and Paula Rego’s first presentation in Germany (Kestner Gesellschaft, Hanover, 2023).
